Deer Creek Picnic Area is on the occupied territory of the Newe (Western Shoshone) and Southern Paiute people.
When we first moved from Seattle to Las Vegas, I was under the misguided impression it was the end of our nature walks and camping. Deer Creek Picnic Area was my very first proof how wrong I was! Everything changed the day we visited this park. I knew then I could learn to love this desert city. I was reminded of a post I’d read years before that said, “Grow where you are planted” That is the inspiration for my original nature school classes. The idea was for us to learn to love the desert while building a like minded community.
This park is just outside Las Vegas in the Spring Mountains.
