“A Life on the Ocean Wave”

“A Life on the Ocean Wave”
~Epes Sargent

b0521d86

A life on the ocean wave,
A home on the rolling deep,
Where the scattered waters rave,
And the winds their revels keep!
Like an eagle caged, I pine
On this dull, unchanging shore:
Oh! give me the flashing brine,
The spray and the tempest’s roar!

Once more on the deck I stand
Of my own swift-gliding craft:
Set sail! farewell to the land!
The gale follows fair abaft.
We shoot through the sparkling foam
Like an ocean-bird set free;–
Like the ocean-bird, our home
We’ll find far out on the sea.

The land is no longer in view,
The clouds have begun to frown;
But with a stout vessel and crew,
We’ll say, Let the storm come down!
And the song of our hearts shall be,
While the winds and the waters rave,
A home on the rolling sea!
A life on the ocean wave!

“The North Wind”

“The North Wind”

fairies-pic-3 Art by Margaret Tarrant (I think)

The North Wind came along one day,
So strong and full of fun;
He called the leaves down from the trees
And said run, children, run…
They came in red or yellow dress,
In shaded green and brown,
And all the short November days
He chased them round the town.

Shed no tear! O shed no tear!
The flower will bloom another year.
Weep no more! O, weep no more!
Young buds sleep in the root’s white core.
Dry your eyes! Oh! dry your eyes!
For I was taught in Paradise
To ease my breast of melodies–
Shed no tear.

Overhead! look overhead!
‘Mong the blossoms white and red–
Look up, look up. I flutter now
On this flush pomegranate bough.
See me! ’tis this silvery bell
Ever cures the good man’s ill.
Shed no tear! O, shed no tear!
The flowers will bloom another year.
Adieu, adieu–I fly, adieu,
I vanish in the heaven’s blue–
Adieu, adieu!

“The Sun is in My Heart”

“The Sun is in My Heart”

The sun is in my heart,
He (she) warms me with his (her) power.
And wakens life and love
In bird and beast and flower.
On the earth I stand upright
With joy I greet the morning sun
Who shines with love on every one
Who shines in the sky, on the land and sea,
And who fills me with light
When he (she) shines on me.
Good morning to you
And good morning to me.

“Sweet and Low”

“Sweet and Low”
~Alfred Tennyson

Sweet and low, sweet and low,
Wind of the western sea,
Low, low, breathe and blow,
Wind of the western sea!
Over the rolling waters go,
Come from the dropping moon and blow,
Blow him again to me;
While my little one, while my pretty one sleeps.

Sleep and rest, sleep and rest,
Father will come to thee soon;
Rest, rest, on mother’s breast,
Father will come to thee soon;
Father will come to his babe in the nest,
Silver sails all out of the west
Under the silver moon:
Sleep, my little one, sleep, my pretty one, sleep.
